New Year’s Resolutions….

With it being the time of year for it, I thought I’d share my New Year’s Resolutions. My work-related ones, obviously. To be honest, it’s been quite a useful process to go through, so I’m hoping I’m better at sticking to these than the ones in my personal life…

1. Take my holiday in a staggered way throughout the year. I’ve talked about this before. No December holiday scramble for me in 2012, honest. Plus generally being refreshed, relaxed and not away at inconvenient times.

2. Learn to do at least one other discipline well enough to really understand it. And I don’t mean social media, we should all understand that anyway. I’m talking brand, or design, or advertising, or the other disciplines that PR people tend to dabble in but not quite be expert in. Working in an integrated agency, I’ve discovered this is apparently every bit as annoying as when you’re sat in a meeting with a load of advertising people and they pipe up with the inevitable “We’ve had this great PR idea….”. So this year, I’m going to start from scratch and learn something properly.

3. Spend more time with old media. Now that I spend my lunchtime on on-line news sites and Twitter, I don’t spend so many of my lunchtimes reading a different national newspaper every day or listening to the World at One, or watching the news bulletins. With hindsight, I miss this. Plus, an awful lot of people still read newspapers and listen to the radio, and our stock-in-trade is creating client opportunities for those media. So this year, I’m going to limit my online lunchtimes to half the week. I suspect this might be the hardest one to stick to….

4. Talk about PR more. I love working in PR. It’s a great job. I love reading and hearing about really good PR stories and campaigns. I don’t spend enough time being nosey to people in other agencies and in-house about what they’ve been doing, even though it can be massively inspiring. If you run into me out and about next year, please don’t be suspicious about me asking you in loads of detail what you’re working on – it’s genuine interest rather than any form of inter-agency subterfuge!

Feel free to disagree or share your own, either here or find me on twitter (@LornaGozzard). And all the best for 2012!
